The modern sport of boxing, as we know it today, developed in the 18th and 19th centuries in England. The first recorded boxing match took place in 1681 in London and it was fought under bare-knuckle rules. The London Prize Ring Rules, established in 1838, were the first set of rules for the sport of boxing and it was the first time that gloves were used.
In the late 19th century, the Marquess of Queensberry rules were established, which became the standard for the sport. These rules included the use of gloves, a limit on the number of rounds, and the introduction of weight classes.
